KCGD: Korean Cancer Genome Database

About KCGD

Korean Cancer Genome Database (KCGD) is an initial project to catalogue genetic disorders responsible for cancer, especially associated with Korean cancer patients, using integrative genome analysis techniques. KCGD has been launched to contribute to better understanding of characteristics of cancer in Korean.

KCGD is coordinated by Bio-Medical Informatics (BMI) team from Korean BioInformation Center (KOBIC), and cooperates with senior scientists and clinicians in numerous medical institutes in Korea. 

Purpose of KCGD

The goal of this project is to provide systematic, comprehensive genomic characterization of human cancers in Korean. Based on integrative analysis of various layered genomic data and clinical data of cancer patients (Clinomics), KCGD provides clinically relevant information and analysis results to generate statistically and biologically significant conclusions.


KCGD infrastructure

KCGD infrastructure overally consists of three parts: Microarray or RNA-seq analysis pipelines, KCGD Databases, and KCGD searching and Viewing interfaces. KCGD curators perform an analysis of Korean cancer patients data using analysis pipelines, select the significant results, and store the ressults in KCGD databases. KCGD search indexer sort out the contents in the database to provide it to user throgh the Internet. KCGD supports not only searcing dataset, gene, or geneset of interest, but also genome-scale visualization of the cancer genomics data. KCGD user is also able to perform an simple survival analysis of the data in the database through simple input of cut-off value and one click.

KCGD in the future

Currently, KCGD stores multiple layered cancer-genomic data obtained from more than 1,000 Korean cancer patients. Most data in the repository consist of microarray-based gene expression or methylation profiling data. In 5 years, KCGD will collect the biological samples obtained from more than 5,000 Korean cancer patients and produce genomic data including RNA-seq data based on whole genome sequencing technology. Futhermore, on the basis of the success of previous genomewide gene expression profile studies of Korean cancer patients, KCGP will characterize and report Korean tumor transcriptome at the systems level to identify potential markers.
